The D'ni Restoration Council, or "DRC", is a group of humans who have twice attempted to rebuild and restore the D'ni city deep beneath the deserts of New Mexico.

History
Origins
The D'ni Restoration Council (DRC) was originally founded in 1997 CE with funds left to the D'ni Restoration Foundation by Elias Zandi after his death. The DRC's purpose was to oversee and manage the restoration of the D'ni cavern and Ages so that they might eventually be opened to the public.

1997 – 2003 CE
During this time, the DRC operated in almost complete obscurity, unassumingly going about the mammoth task of restoring the D'ni Cavern for eventual exploration by the public. In July of 2002, Dr. Watson and Rand Miller from Cyan Worlds worked with authorized explorer IMForeman to broadcast a live tour of the D'ni cavern to attendees at Mysterium in Philadelphia, PA.

At the beginning of 2003, explorers began arriving in the cavern without the permission of the DRC. These individuals were let in by Yeesha and Jeff Zandi, and forced the DRC to divert their efforts toward restoring a number of D'ni neighborhoods for those "unauthorized explorers" to inhabit. Later that year, the DRC began grudgingly accepting more of these explorers and unofficially opened the cavern to the public. That same year, the DRC announced that UbiSoft Entertainment had signed on to fund their restoration efforts.

Throughout the time that the DRC allowed unauthorized explorers into the cavern, they maintained an extreme displeasure for the meddling of Yeesha and Jeff Zandi in allowing the public into D'ni before the DRC was ready to accommodate them. Explorers were often cautioned against trusting their Relto Books to get them out of dangerous situations, and for a time, the DRC actively attempted to remove Bahro artifacts such as Journey Cloths from their locations throughout the Cavern and Ages.

This period is sometimes referred to as "The Second Restoration". A previous restoration effort was led by Atrus roughly 150 years prior, though it was abandoned in favor of resettlement in a new Age, Releeshahn.

2004 – 2006 CE
In February 2004, UbiSoft Entertainment terminated its funding for the DRC's efforts, effectively forcing the organization to shut down. Later that year, Victor Laxman began to allow small groups of explorers back into the Cavern on an "at-your-own-risk" basis, and no plans were announced to continue the restoration.

In late 2005, Victor Laxman returned again, gathering his former colleagues on the DRC's council (minus Dr. Watson) to begin tentative work to resume the restoration effort. Larger numbers of explorers were invited to visit the Cavern, and over the next year, the DRC held several Town Hall meetings with explorers to discuss what the future might hold.

OOC
This period marks the February 2004 termination of the Uru Live: Prologue beta test by UbiSoft, and the creation of Untìl Uru by Cyan Worlds later that year. It also marks the creation of the D'mala Shard in Untìl Uru, a benchmark platform created by Cyan to show Turner Broadcasting that Uru was still a viable product with considerable interest and a sizable community. This effort ultimately culminated in Turner's funding of Myst Online: Uru Live as a GameTap exclusive product.

2006 – 2008
Eventually, the DRC acquired a new source of funding from a venture capitalist named Cate Alexander. Ms. Alexander was not a terribly popular figure. The DRC took issue with her interest in results over safety, and the explorers took issue with her no-nonsense attitude, and her generally dismissive behavior when it came to community concerns. No one could argue, however, that Cate was not effective in achieving the results she sought. Almost like clockwork, the DRC opened a new area or Age to the public roughly once a month for nine months.

The new DRC was also much more accommodating and trusting of the use of Relto Books by explorers. Several of the DRC Council members had elected to take Yeesha's first Journey by this time, and several Ages were even released without any sort of Linking Book back to the Nexus or to the cavern, counting on all explorers having immediate access to their own escape mechanism. Still, despite their ubiquitous use throughout the explorer population, some decried the DRC's apparent lack of concern for safety in not putting back-up links to the Nexus in every Age they opened, while others took issue with the often shoddy state of the Ages, wondering why the DRC had chosen to release them with what were sometimes rather obvious safety deficiencies (Tetsonot was a favorite for these sorts of complaints).

The debate over the priority of safety in the restoration came to a head when, in May of 2007, Michael Engberg's daughter Willow (or "Wheely", as she was known to explorers) was killed by a bahro after she stumbled into a hidden chamber, following a series of earthquakes in Ae'gura which also claimed the life of the friend she was exploring with at the time. Michael Engberg quit the DRC over the incident, and the rest of the DRC Council was left shaken.

As 2007 came to a close, Ms. Alexander announced that she would no longer be funding the restoration effort. Despite an all-out effort on the part of Victor Laxman and Marie Sutherland, no additional funding could be found, and the DRC once again abandoned their efforts. The cavern was shut down in April of 2008.

2010 – present
In 2010, the DRC discovered that Dr. Watson had found that explorers were starting to sneak their way back into D'ni. Explorers have been cautioned that the DRC is not currently active in the cavern, as was the case from 2004 to 2006.

In 2016, the DRC website was taken offline, and the domain redirected to Cyan's official website. For now, it appears that the DRC have abandoned their efforts for good.

Personnel
The DRC is staffed by a group of experts in various fields, and employs a variety of engineers and support staff.

Council Members
The members of the DRC's leading council over the years have been:
* Dr. Richard A. Watson (1997 – 2004)
* Dr. Marie Sutherland (1997 – present)
* Dr. Ikuro Kodama (1997 – present)
* Victor Laxman (1997 – present)
* Michael Engberg (1997 – 2007)
* Cate Alexander (2006 – 2007)

Outside Employees
The DRC has only ever employed one person full-time who was not a Council member or a Restoration Engineer (perhaps a more appropriate description would be "private contractor"): Douglas Sharper.

Restoration Engineers
Restoration Engineer

To help with the massive effort of restoring the D'ni civilization, Restoration Engineers (or "ResEngs") were hired by the DRC council members. Later, once the cavern was opened to the public, these ResEngs were tasked with assisting newcomers by providing orientation classes and assisting explorers who became stuck during their travels. The following individuals have been employed by the DRC in the past:

* Phil "phend" Henderson (2002)
* Brice "Nikto" Tebbs (2002 - 2003)
* A. Biegalski (2005 - 2007)
* K. Miller (2005 - 2007)
* M. Cowart (2005 - 2007)
* B. Dreschel (2005 - 2007)
* M. Dogherra (2005 - 2007)
* G. Buddell (2007)
* M. Curn (2007)

OOC
The ResEngs listed as employed from 2005 through 2007 were employees of Cyan Worlds who served as in-game support staff, and who responded to bug report tickets submitted to the Myst Online support website. Those employed from 2002 through 2003 were Cyan developers and/or game characters created for storytelling purposes.

Er'cana is a large harvest Age, used by the D'ni to provide nutritional supplements to the bioluminescent algae living in the D'ni cavern's lake.

Appearance
Most of the Age is a series of arid canyons. Tall fruiting plants grow on long fibrous stalks in and around small pockets of water. Two sets of elevated tracks run through the main canyon. One branches off into an area that is inaccessible due to a chasm in the canyon floor; the other terminates in a sealed door, blocking access into the rest of the canyon. Both sets of tracks lead back to a massive stone structure which spans the width of the main canyon. This structure acts as a dam, creating an artificial lake on the upstream side of the canyon. It also serves as a manufacturing plant for the pellets used to feed the lake algae back in D'ni. Snow-capped mountains stand in the far distance. Their run-off feeds the artificial lake.

High on the canyon wall next to the factory is a small shanty town. The slaves that were brought to Er'cana to run the machinery lived in these precarious quarters, but there is no sign of them in the present day.

History
D'ni history
The main purpose of Er'cana was the production of pellets rich in nutrients. When dropped into the D'ni cavern's lake, the algae there would respond to the influx of nutrients, producing extra light. Former Guildmaster Kadish used a special formulation of these pellets in an effort to bolster his claims to be the prophesied "Grower", who would "bring light" to the cavern. In fact, much of the pellet-making machinery was designed by Kadish. To test the pellets, a silo was built in the Uran district of D'ni, where they could be fed to an isolated pool of lake water.

First DRC restoration
Following the DRC's first abandonment of the cavern in early 2004 CE, Er'cana was one of two Ages used by Yeesha for the Path of the Shell ndash a journey which followed on from the first task she gave new explorers of freeing a bahro from imprisonment.

Second DRC restoration
During a town hall meeting on July 6, 2006, Dr. Victor Kodama of the DRC noted that he hoped Er'cana's resources would be useful in future efforts to restore the cavern's lake water's algae to a more normal light level and activity cycle. The Age progressed to Phase Five on January 22, 2007, and was finally released by the DRC on June 26, 2007. However, by the time the DRC closed the Cavern again in April of 2008, no visible progress had been made on the lake algae project.
Minkata is a desert Age in a trinary star system. It was used by the Guild of Surveyors to train new guildsmen in orienteering.

Appearance
The Age is nothing but a flat, endless expanse of desert. Constant wind whips the desert sand into a hazy storm, which intensifies the farther away from the link-in point one travels. A circular structure made of bones and rope serves as the Age's center-point. A sheet of canvas with a compass painted on it covers this structure. Three suns shine down on the landscape, casting three separate shadows that align with points on the compass rose. Several flags arrayed around the area call out their distance from the center-point in spans.

Five "kivas" can be found by following a series of orienteering paths. These are small holes in the terrain that descend into roughly circular underground rooms. Each room is ringed with a circle of tusks, and a large Guild of Surveyors emblem is carved into the rock at the center. A cracked standing stone rests at the far side of the room from its entrance, with a sigil and the phrase "find your path in the stars" carved into it. Touching the sigil turns day into night ndash the process is unclear, but linking seems to be involved. While the wind and sandstorm remains constant, the sky is full of stars, with a view of two different galaxies on opposite horizons.

History
This Age was once used as an orienteering training Age by the Guild of Surveyors. It is unclear when the guild started using it, or whether it was still in use in 9400 DE when D'ni fell. It was placed on the DRC's restoration list in March of 2007 CE, and seemingly fast-tracked through the restoration process. It was already in phase 3 at that point, and was released to explorers only two months later in May.

Tomahna is the name Atrus gave to the new home he built on the surface of Earth for himself, Catherine, and their daughter Yeesha, after the events detailed in the Book of D'ni. His part in the restoration of the D'ni civilization now over, Atrus turned his attention back to his family.

The property on which Tomahna is located is very barren and desert-like. During the intial explorations of D'ni by the Uru Explorers, Dr. Watson let slip that Tomahna is several miles from the Cleft. Yeesha refers to the Cleft as Tomahna, but it was not technically part of the estate. The home itself is something of an oasis, situated high above a broad valley, with a plant-filled sunroom overlooking it. The rest of the home is a collection of greenhouses and spacious rooms arrayed around a large pool of water, which flows (or flowed, at the time) out of the estate and away through the desert.

Atrus and Catherine moved to Tomahna, abandoning Myst Island, because of the overwhelming memories of Sirrus, Achenar, and their intricate and destructive deception. Yet, almost 20 years after that betrayal, Atrus and Catherine had a linking chamber installed beneath their bedroom that enabled them to check up on their wayward sons – a decision that nearly proved far too costly. In the introduction to Myst V - End of Ages, Atrus mentions in a letter or journal entry that the time had come for him to abandon Tomahna as well, now that Catherine was dead and Yeesha off fulfilling her role in the restoration of D'ni.

Uru is a spinoff of the Myst series, first released in 2003 as Uru: Ages Beyond Myst by original series developer Cyan. Unlike the rest of the Myst games, Uru is set in the present day, and chronicles the effort to rebuild the recently-rediscovered D'ni civilization buried deep beneath the New Mexico desert. The restoration effort is led by the D'ni Restoration Council, but explorers let into the underground cavern by Jeff Zandi find that Yeesha has her own plan to effect a more spiritual restoration.

Originally, Ages Beyond Myst was intended to be the standalone introduction to a massively multiplayer online game (MMO) called Uru Live, which Cyan would support with regular content and story updates. It launched as an open beta called Uru Live: Prologue alongside the standalone Ages Beyond Myst release. Unfortunately, the game's publisher, UbiSoft, canceled the online game and shut down the Prologue servers in February of 2004. The remaining content that was already close to completion was repackaged as a set of two expansion packs: "To D'ni" and "The Path of the Shell". To D'ni was released several weeks after the online game was shut down as a free download, and The Path of the Shell was released several months later as a retail purchase. A compendium edition, Uru: Complete Chronicles, included the original game and both expansions, and was released at the same time.

In 2006, video game subscription service GameTap approached Cyan to revive Uru Live, this time as Myst Online: Uru Live. The game launched in February of 2007, with new content rolling out each month. In May, GameTap and Cyan began to package these releases as "episodes" that would condense that month's story material into a one-week period in an effort to improve engagement. The September update was billed as the "season 1 finale", after which no new content was released. After several months of silence, Cyan announced that GameTap had decided to cancel the game, and the servers were shut down in April of 2008.

In 2010, Cyan re-opened Myst Online: Uru Live as a free-to-play game commonly referred to as MOULa ("Myst Online: Uru Live, again"), and later open-sourced the game's engine. While several community-developed software updates have been applied since MOULa's launch, there has been no new content created by Cyan since the GameTap cancellation in 2008, and none is planned.
Talianahttps://archive.guildofarchivists.org/w/index.php?title=Kadish_Tolesa&diff=6247Kadish Tolesa2018-07-25T16:16:33Z
Taliana: added image, removed image-missing-template

Kadish Tolesa is the personal Age of Kadish, a former guild master in the Guild of Writers. It served as both his estate and as a massive combination lock for a vault containing a vast quantity of material wealth.

Appearance
Gigantic trees dominate the landscape of this Age, so much so that they have grown together into solid walls. The trees' expansion also encroached on Kadish's estate, damaging many of its structures. The explorable area of the Age is located high up in the trees; in one area there is an overlook that provides a view beyond the trees, and no ground is visible from that vantage point. There is a twilight hue to the air, casting everything in shades of purple and blue.

History
Kadish's estate
Kadish wrote this Age shortly before the fall of D'ni. DRC estimates place its writing no more than 10 years earlier, around 9390 DE. He was an adherent to the teachings of King Naygen, who encouraged his citizens pursue material wealth and had a secret puzzle chamber built into the Guild Council's chambers when it was renovated during his reign. Following in Naygen's footsteps, Kadish constructed a lengthy and elaborate series of puzzles in Kadish Tolesa to secure his personal vault of riches. He placed clues to the puzzles' solutions in an art gallery he owned on Ae'gura, hiding them in plain sight.

When D'ni fell, Kadish escaped to his Age and locked himself away in his vault. He stubbornly remained there until his death, leaving behind a note justifying his decision not to return to D'ni.

Restoration
While the DRC began work on Kadish Tolesa in 2000 CE, it was not approved for release when, in late 2003, Yeesha granted explorers access to the Age as part of the Journey ndash a series of tasks that ultimately led to explorers freeing a bahro from imprisonment. To this end, a journey door was placed on the wall of the cave where Kadish's vault is located.

The Age was still listed as being at phase 5 of the restoration process when the DRC abandoned the cavern in April of 2004 (it had been scheduled for release in "Q1 2004"). When they returned in 2006, the Age was already widely accessible, and it was not re-listed on the new restoration projects page of their website.

A Journey door is a special door that can only be unlocked by activating a series of Journey cloths. There are four doors in the Ages found in Yeesha's Journey, each requiring its own set of cloths to be activated first. A second set of doors are found in the Ages of the Second Journey, which require their associated cloths to be activated in a specific sequence within a short amount of time.

Behind each Journey door is a dead-end tunnel. A person who walks deep enough into one of these tunnels is linked to a bahro cave.

The most famous Journey door is the one in Eder Kemo. The DRC tried repeatedly to open this door, but failed. In September of 2002, Phil Henderson was last seen near the door before his disappearance, and reappeared behind that door in November of 2003.

A Journey cloth is a burlap cloth used in a variety of Journeys to track an explorer's progress. The name is used interchangeably to describe any Journey's cloth, or to specifically refer to the cloths used in Yeesha's Journey. Not every Journey utilizes these cloths, but those that do each have their own unique design. Yeesha's Journey uses rectangular yellow cloths with a spiraling hand symbol, while The Path of the Shell uses circular green cloths with a shell symbol.

Properties
Common properties
When touched, a Journey cloth is able to recognize who touched it, how many of the other cloths in that Age that person has also touched, and which cloth was last touched. The symbol on the cloth will also glow when touched, making a distinctive sound.

Journey cloths also generally serve as "bookmarks", except where noted below. After touching a cloth for the first time in an Age, a new bookmark appears in the Linking Book for that Age in the user's Relto bookshelf. This bookmark can then be used to quickly return to that location within the Age.

Yeesha's Journey
The cloths used in Yeesha's Journey are rectangular yellow cloths with a spiraling hand symbol in the center. When touched, they will remember a person's position relative to the cloth itself, even if the cloth has moved. This enables the user of a cloth to bypass certain security measures designed around the limitations of D'ni Linking Books, such as the rotating fortresses in Gahreesen.

These cloths also visually indicate how many cloths an explorer has interacted with in a certain Age—or, in the case of Eder Kemo and Eder Gira, a pair of Ages. Each set of seven cloths glows with a unique color when touched. There are three segments dedicated to the palm and thumb, and another four covering each finger individually. Once an Age's Journey cloths have all been activated, the Journey door for that Age can be unlocked.

Second Journey
The cloths in the Second Journey are purple diamond-shaped cloths with a complex spiral pattern in the center. They do not act as bookmarks. Instead, they act as a combination lock for the Journey doors in Eder Tsogahl and Eder Delin. The cloths must be activated in a specific order as dictated by the mechanism within the door. If all of the cloths are activated within the necessary time frame, the door opens and explorers can enter the cave behind it.

The Path of the Shell
The Path of the Shell's cloths are circular, green, and have a stylized shell design in the center. While these cloths act as bookmarks, they do not behave the same way as the cloths found in Yeesha's Journey. Rather, they behave like normal Linking Books, returning a person to the literal point in space where they touched the cloth, rather than a point in space relative to the cloth itself.

All of these cloths must be activated in order to complete the Journey, but unlike other Journeys that use cloths, there is no Journey door to activate. Instead, each cloth activates a segment of a shell portal which, once completed, will link explorers to another location.

The Guild Hall is a D'ni governmental building located in the capital on the island of Ae'gura. It overlooks the harbor and much of the lower sprawl of the island. This building housed the Council chambers, where matters of state were debated by the Guild Council.

Construction
Replacing an older Guild Hall
The current Guild Hall was originally constructed in 2502 DE under the reign of King Naygen, who commissioned it to replace an older, less impressive structure. It was designed to straddle and stand atop the Tomb of the Great King, a strong statement about the historical attitudes toward King Ahlsendar at that time.

Expansion under Kerath
In 6970 DE, only a few years before abdicating the throne, King Kerath decreed that the Guild Hall should be expanded. The new structure was intended to symbolize the increased status of the Guilds as the governing body of the D'ni government, now that there would be no more kings. When the expansions were completed, the new building completely covered the Tomb of the Great King, effectively sealing it off beneath a massive new government plaza.

Design
The Guild Hall has the appearance of a stylized tree. The "roots" of the structure extend down into the original plaza for the Tomb of the Great King. Six "branches" extend out from the central trunk of the building, forming multi-story offices, with each wing housing space for three of the eighteen major guilds that made up the Guild Council. Atop these wings sat the Council Chambers, where the Guilds would convene to debate and vote on legislative matters. These chambers were circular, with 18 columns supporting the roof, from which hung the crests and colors of each of the 18 major Guilds. Stairs, which doubled as seats, led down into the center of the room, where five stone thrones sat, reserved for the five Great Lords of D'ni.

Restoration
First Restoration
In the 9480s, Atrus and a collection of D'ni who had survived the fall of their civilization attempted to rebuild the city in the D'ni cavern. They uncovered the Tomb of the Great King after intentionally collapsing a portion of the plaza that had been damaged by falling debris. This, in turn, led them to Terahnee, where the rest of the D'ni's brethren had gone to escape the destruction of their original home world. When Atrus and his companions returned from Terahnee, they decided to abandon the cavern, leaving the Guild Hall in an unfinished state.

Second Restoration
When the DRC first began restoring areas of the cavern in the late 1990s and early 2000s CE, the Guild Hall was deemed to large of a project to take on, and only authorized individuals were allowed to go near it. In 2003, an interior wall in the Guild Hall collapsed on Phil Henderson, a DRC restoration engineer and follower of Yeesha. He had been communing with the bahro in the Guild Hall despite being directly instructed to avoid the area for his own safety. After days of digging through rubble, the DRC declared Phil dead despite the absence of a body. This event was one of several that led the DRC to shut down all restoration efforts in early 2004.

The Cleft is a natural crack in the earth near the Volcano in the New Mexico desert, on the property of Jeff Zandi. According to the Book of Atrus, it is roughly eighty feet long, fifteen feet wide, and thirty feet deep, though its appearance in Uru seems to contradict those figures slightly.

History
At one time, the Cleft served as a way-point on the journey from the Lodge to the nearest city (Tadjinar, according to Book of Ti'ana). Anna and her father would often stay there on their way to or from the city. After the Fall of D'ni, Anna and Gehn took up residence in the Cleft, but Gehn left in his late teens, feeling a serious disdain for both his mother and the conditions in which he was living.

After Gehn abandoned Atrus as a baby, Anna cared for him and raised him in the Cleft. Atrus's mother, Keta, is buried here as well.

The Cleft was largely abandoned after Atrus was taken back to D'ni by Gehn, and Anna followed them down. Apparently Atrus kept a number of his Ages there, along with a collection of tools, but there is little record of the Cleft being used for much else. In recent years, Jeff Zandi has been found camping outside of it, welcoming anyone who felt "called" to the location. Yeesha had apparently made use of the Cleft in times past as well, and her remaining message to visitors guides them on their Journey into D'ni.

According to RAWA, the Cleft is located a small number of miles away from Tomahna, the home which Atrus and Catherine established for themselves almost 200 years ago.

A bahro stone or "linking stone" is a small stone tablet with a cloth on one side, much like a Journey cloth. A linking panel is woven into the cloth, which links the user to another Age much like a Linking Book would. However, bahro stones are also capable of linking to other places within the same Age, like Relto Books can. They are also capable of linking to places that Linking Books cannot, such as a specific room within a rotating structure. It is widely believed that Yeesha or the bahro have provided them to enable explorers to access areas that illustrate a point Yeesha wishes to make, or areas which the DRC do not wish explorers to access yet.

The DRC have tried to remove these stones, but they were always replaced in short order. Douglas Sharper recorded several instances of trying to relocate a stone he found in Teledahn, only to find it returned a short time later.

Bahro pillars are round, bone-topped pillars approximately five feet tall. It is not clear how, but Yeesha claims that they are tied to the soul of an individual bahro. There are four pillars, which Yeesha indirectly tasks explorers with transporting from the "blue" bahro cave to Relto and then back to the "orange" bahro cave in the Rudenna Passage in D'ni. By placing all four pillars in this "orange" cave, an explorer will release a bahro into the cavern, and a connection to the Star Fissure opens on the explorer's Relto.

When in Relto, the pillars have a blue-gray mist coming from the top, and glow less often than when in one of the caves.
