Unlike in English, each character corresponds to a single sound. Several characters are distinguished by the absence or presence of a dot: these are often pairs of a fricative and stop (e.g. <dni>f</dni> f and <dni>p</dni> p) or a single vowel and a diphthong (e.g. <dni>o</dni> o and <dni>O</dni> oy).
