A fusion-compounder is a small atomic forging device used in the manufacture of synthetic stones, such as nara. It rearranges the atomic bonds of the material being fed into it, creating synthetics which are substantially stronger and denser than the original material. The technology was invented in 4826 DE by a member of the Guild of Stone-Masons. He had been accepted under the policies of King Demath, who required that all guilds admit a certain percentage of qualified students, even if they were unable to afford the cost of attendance.
