Amateria is one of 5 Lesson Ages written by Atrus to teach his sons, Sirrus and Achenar, how to write Ages. The concept embodied in this Age is that of dynamic forces and their tendency to cause change in a system.

One of the interesting pieces of technology in Amateria is the ice spheres which roll along the tracks, and which are generated seemingly out of thin air by the central structure in the Age. The Exile Strategy Guide has a section of information about how these spheres are formed. Essentially, a special crystal from Amateria is used in conjunction with a water lathe. The spheres are, however, very susceptible to damage due to vibration and impact, as well as limited in size. The ice shields on Narayan use a similar technology, but the properties of Narayani water allow the spheres to form much larger, stronger, and without the aid of the water lathe.

Amateria's lesson phrase was dynamic forces spur change.
