Flame was the cat Atrus kept as a pet during his youth. Atrus's grandmother, Ti'ana, had bartered Flame from a passing caravan. When Atrus first acquired her, Flame had originally been named Pahket,[a][2] but Atrus felt the name didn't "feel right", and so opted to rename her Flame.[3]

Shortly prior to the storm that gave Atrus his first experience of rain, Atrus locked Flame in the Cleft storeroom to protect her from the oncoming storm.[4]

Flame died as a result of ingesting some of the plants Atrus had been growing using apparently toxic substances obtained from the soil surrounding of the Cleft's volcano.[5]

Notes[edit | edit source]
