According to legend, Ramel was a D'ni woman, a member of the cult of the Tree known for her great beauty. Jolatha offered her to King Me'erta if he would alter the oath of the Guild of Writers. Although Me'erta agreed, the resistance of Master Tremal prevented any change to the oath.
