The Lattice appears to be the communications backbone of the KI: the KI's means of text and voice conversation and image transfer all work through the Lattice. The exact nature of this structure is unknown, and the ability to work through Ages thus far a mystery.

The Lattice could be described as a redundant array: parts of it can be added or removed, and its capacity grows or shrinks accordingly.

As part of his research, Victor Laxman frequently runs into problems with the Lattice. On December 19, 2006, he cited "strange anomalies", presumably worried that they may have unexpected averse effects.
