Talk:Books of Birenni
A Few Conundrums[edit source]
I've decided to use a section of the talk page to document some of the conundrums that have arisen from this article.
Book versus Books:
According to Cyan's timeline, multiple books were found on 2262 Leevobro 12. It's never stated whether that means all of the books or just some of them. However, only one of the books contained the cure to the plague, so that one gets hailed as the Book of Birenni, and seemingly the rest tend to get completely forgotten about as if they were unimportant.
Thus this problem is sort of resolved, but one has to be careful about whether a source is talking about the Book or the Books.
The wedding:
The Hemelin notebook says that Hemelin and Lalen were wed in 2262, the same hahr that the books were found. The D'ni Restoration Archive says that it was actually six years later (in 2268) that the wedding took place on the day the plague was declared officially defeated. Note that neither of these actually gives a date for the wedding.
RAWA was asked about this discrepency and added a hahr of 2260 to the mix, but said that 2260 was probably the original wedding and the other two dates were vow renewals. That clears up the problem of which hahr was the 'real' wedding, but still doesn't give a precise date for the wedding.
Not knowing the date of the wedding wouldn't be a major issue if it weren't for a certain other problem...
The festival:
This is the most confusing problem.
The DRC Restoration Archive says that "From that day forward, for many years, the celebrations were grand." and goes on to say how people would choose 'that day' to be wed and describes the fire marble search. That sounds like a festival, but it's vague. It doesn't say how many years 'many years' is - 10, 100, 1000, every year until 9400. Worse still, it doesn't say which day. It gives the impression that this 'celebration' didn't start until after the plague was cured, which happens to be the same day as the 2268 (second) vow renewal of Hemelin and Lalen. There's a chance that was the six-hahr anniversary of the discovery of the Book(s) of Birenni (Leevobro 12), but that's not necessarily the case.
The Cyan timeline page lists the discovery as an event, but not the alleged festival as a holiday. What makes this particularly notable is that the opening of the first Common Library is listed in both the timeline and the holidays section.
So we end up with fire marble hunts that happen on an unknown day for an unspecified number of years, that commemorate the discovery of a book and, somehow coincide with a wedding that supposedly happened on the same day (possibly twice).
It's a weird one, and it's probably only going to be fixed by a reference that either has yet to be found or yet to be created.
