According to the DRC, each mark acts as smaller version of the Great Zero for the purpose of establishing a reference point for the Great Zero Coordinate System (GZCS, also known as the KI Positioning System, or KIPS) in the given Age. As in D'ni, coordinates are measured from and relative to this zero point, and will indicate changes in distance, angle, and elevation. The angle is measured relative to the radiant of the Maintainer's mark, which is always aligned with the Age's magnetic north. At the present time, the Great Zero Coordinate System does not function outside of the D'ni cavern, which means that KIs do not register coordinates in other ages or on the surface.

A Maintainer's mark is a small, metal spike, capped with a glowing marker bearing the Guild of Maintainers' emblem <. It was driven into the ground in every Age approved by the Guild of Maintainers.

Maintainer's marks can be found in all of the Journey Ages and the Garden Ages Eder Delin and Eder Tsogahl, but there are no Maintainer's Marks visible in Er'cana, Ahnonay, Jalak, Minkata, or any of the Pod Age pods.
