Guilds were a central part of D'ni society. They served both a social and governmental function. Many were focused on crafts or trades, though other professions such as law and education were represented as well. The 18 major D'ni guilds formed the guild council. Originally this council served as a sort of parliament under the king, but when Kerath abdicated the throne without naming a successor in 6977 DE, the guilds became the sole governing body in the D'ni empire until its collapse in 9400 DE.

The DRC attempted to revitalize the guilds in 2007 CE, officially recognizing and restoring the guild pubs of four D'ni guilds and providing an additional pub for the explorer-created Guild of Greeters. Other explorers have also created modern versions of various guilds, though none have been officially recognized by the DRC.
