The great tree used to be one of the most beautiful landmarks in the Fifth Age, towering high into the sky. In fact, the description of this tree was the object that first convinced Atrus to link into Riven after Gehn trapped him in K'veer with the Age's Descriptive Book.
Sadly, the instabilities in the Age caused the tree to slowly die. For example, a crack appeared at the trunk of the tree about 10 meters wide, deep enough for a few people to walk inside. The tree finally died when the Star Fissure opened, and a lightning bolt burned the branches.
In time, Gehn cut it down to produce paper used for Linking Books, and converted the stump into a prison, where Catherine was held.
